How to Make Responsive Images With CSS, HTML, WordPress & More?

Small, medium-sized, and large companies turn their brick and mortar business online in the form of websites, making the competition more intense than ever before.

Of course, as a business owner, you want to make noise over the internet, reach a broader market, attract a new audience, have a good search engine ranking result, and improve conversion rate.

What are you going to do to turn all of these goals into a reality? While there are many things to do on your website, making your images responsive is a great start and something you cannot afford to overlook.

CSS

You have asked some of your friends how to make a responsive image in CSS. Then, they answer with this object-fit property.

As a beginner, it is probably your first time to hear object-fit property. What is it, though? Object fit property simply specifies how to resize a specific image for a variety of screen sizes.

Developers love this object-fit property as it either helps them define if it is ideal in stretching or shrinking an image depending on the screen sizes.

This object-fit property naturally has different values, including Fill, Scale Down, Contain, None, and Cover. And web developers use them all in CSS.

Unfortunately, this object-fit property is not available in Internet Explorer.

Object position is another notable property utilized in CS. As its name implies, this property basically is defining a particular image’s position on how much one likes it be moved with its current position, particularly when rendered unto popular browsers.

However, it does not support Opera Mini Browser and Internet Explorer.

Another great way to make responsive images in CSS is the image-set property. Like the srcset property, the image set property does not only calculate the resolution but also renders the image in a manner that matches the screen.

That means developers could place as many images as they need. Then, they have to instruct CSS to load the best photo.

The image set property, however, is not compatible with Opera Mini Browser, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and some versions of Microsoft Edge.

While it is a good learning experience to know how to make responsive images in CSS, do not forget that HTML is the most preferred. It is not only easy to navigate but also efficient.

WordPress

Launched in 2003, WordPress has transformed into a sought-after content management system in the world.

Research suggests that WordPress is by far the most commonly used CMS powering approximately 40.0% of websites over the internet.

It is also estimated that there are more than 500 websites built using WordPress every day.

Although it has limitations, we cannot deny the fact that WordPress has incredible features. Aside from a quick and easy set-up, the CMS is packed with countless images for websites.

Since it does not emphasize coding, tagging various images with several styles may not be possible.

What are you going to do now? The 4.4 version of WordPress offers built-in responsiveness in every available image.

How does it work? Every time a developer uploads a photo, the CMS will make two more copies. Each has different resolutions and sizes for varying screens. That means WordPress only loads the appropriate image.

WordPress also performs responsiveness thru the srcset attribute on sites. The moment an image is uploaded on a specific website, it will be then placed along with a srcset tag using varying resolutions. However, the CMS does not modify every photo’s aspect ratio.

Is it possible in changing this srcset attribute in images in the CMS? Of course! You can modify the resolution. What developers usually do is go to the specific HTML code as well as change the resolution of an image and target device. But an experience in PHP is necessary.

Calculating a photo’s size was a big concern for many before. Things changed today because WordPress has built-in functions you should give a shot. Some of them include wp_get_attachment_image_srcset(), fwp_image_add_srcset_and_sizes(), and wp_calculate_image_src().

HTML

There are two popular terms in making responsive images in HTML, scrset attribute and resolution switching.

Scrset attribute can place the image that best matches the screen size. Scrset attribute contains a wide range of image URLs for every image stored on the server.

Every time the resolution is measured and assessed, the image with the suitable width is chosen.

Scrset attribute, however, is not compatible with Opera Mini and Internet Explorer Browser.

Resolution switching, on the other hand, is another attribute developers will encounter along the way. Instead of specifying sizes, resolution switching specifies the different image resolutions. The higher the number, the more desirable is the resolution.

When searching for an HTML editor, there are many options to narrow down. The trick is to read reviews online to make a confident decision.
